Popis

Marjoram is an herbaceous plant with oval, green leaves and clusters of small, pleasantly scented flowers. As an ornamental plant, it can be cultivated in the garden, in pots or directly in the ground.

The plant has a ramified structure and can reach up to 40cm. Sowing should be done in spring. It adapts well to dry soils and high temperatures. If cultivated in pots, it should be placed in a semi-shaded spot. It needs frequent but not abundant watering. It is very sensitive to cold temperatures.

Dried marjoram is used to compose dry flower bouquets. As a cooking seasoning is used for preparing sauces and for flavouring meat, fish dishes and salads. Its aroma is reminiscent of oregano.

As a medicinal plant, it was traditionally used as a tonic. It also has sedative, carminative and antispasmodic properties. It is also effective as an insect repellent.
