Rocalba Watercress seeds, a fast growing aromatic plant
Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) belongs to the Bracicaceae family. It is a plant which originates from the humid and marshy areas of Europe and Central Asia. They grow in groups reaching 10-50cm in height. They develop fleshy and hollow stems, with bipinnate leaves and small white flowers in bunches.
In spring the seeds are germinated in a small pot or directly in open ground. Groups of 3-5 seeds are placed in a 10cm x 10cm planting frame, covering them with 0.3mm of peat, worm humus and limestone soil in similar proportions so as to obtain a clayey texture.
If a seedbed is used, it is ideal to place a tray with a little water underneath to keep the soil constantly moist or water it frequently. It should also be watered abundantly if it has been sown directly to prevent the soil from drying out.
Rocalba Watercress seeds, spicy flavour very suitable for salads
It would be ideal to maintain a water flow nearby the cultivation area to maintain the soil waterlogged, also an automatic irrigation system can be installed instead. These plants grow well both in the sun and in semi-shade, sprouting quickly and developing vigorously.
It is a perennial plant that produces underground stems like crawlers looking for water. They can grow quite sideways depending on the circumstances. It develops fleshy rounded leaves that are harvested for consumption throughout the hot season, and after 2 months of germination.
It is perfect for eating fresh in our salads. It can also be used as a complement with grilled meat and fish or to enrich our stews, providing a very particular aroma.
