Rocalba Gogi Shanghai Express, highly nutritious and healthy red berries

Gogi «Shanghai Express» (Lycium barbarum) belongs to the Solanaceae family. It is a plant native to Asia, particularly to the Tibet area (Himalayas) and China. Nowadays its cultivation is widely spread throughout Europe. In España it is frequently cultivated in Almeria, Murcia and Alicante.

It is a simple to cultivate vigorous plant, developing into a bush up to 2-3m high with long, fine, thorny branches and long, intense green leaves. In spring it produces violet or pink flared flowers.

It can be germinated from mid-winter, in seedbeds or in direct sowing (2m x 0.5m cultivation frame). Simply place a few seeds in a pot or a hole, cover them with a light soil layer of about 3-5mm, leaving them almost on the surface. The substrate should be a mixture of soil with compost or worm humus.

Rocalba Gogi Shanghai Express, drought and frost resistant

The plants sprout in about 4-6 weeks, provided with a warm place (20-25°C) and indirect light. In two months the plant has grown enough to be transplanted in open ground or in the final pot, once it has reached about 15 cm in size and developed several leaves.

It needs to be placed in the sun or in the sun and shade in order to develop optimally, although it adapts to all climates and substrates. It is an extremely robust plant, being resistant to frost, withstanding temperatures down to -20ºC. It is not very demanding with water, although in summer needs irrigation. It is interesting to install a drip or automatic irrigation system to wet the substrate when it is completely dry.

From late spring, the flowers are transformed into bunches of elongated red berries similar to small tomatoes. These should be picked carefully and manually, although if we gently shake the bush the ripe berries will come off and can be picked directly from the ground.
