Bluelab EC-Pen – check nutrient solution conductivity and temperature

The Bluelab EC-Pen measures electrical conductivity and temperature in irrigation water and nutrient solutions. This compact handheld meter suits both new and experienced growers who need to check their nutrient solution when mixing it and throughout use.

Understand EC and ppm readings

Electrical conductivity indicates how readily your solution conducts electricity and provides a guide to its dissolved salt concentration. The meter does not identify individual nutrients. You can select EC, ppm 500 or ppm 700; both ppm readings are calculated from the measured EC value. Choose the same scale as your feeding schedule. To check pH as well, add a separate instrument such as the Bluelab pH-Pen.

Temperature-compensated measurements with reading hold

The built-in temperature sensor enables automatic temperature compensation of conductivity readings. Place the probe tip in the solution with its shroud fitted and wait for the reading to stabilise. The hold function keeps the value on screen for easier reading, while the backlit display helps in low light. The housing is waterproof and floats, and the pen switches off automatically after four minutes.

Keep the probe clean and check its accuracy

The pen is factory calibrated, so calibration is not required before first use. Rinse the probe under running tap water after each measurement, then clean and check it at least monthly. The Bluelab EC Cleaning and Calibration Set and a 2.77 mS/cm conductivity standard solution are suitable for this routine. Manual recalibration is only recommended when readings remain outside the measurement tolerance after cleaning.
